For most of SEO’s history, the unit of optimisation was the keyword. You picked keywords, you created pages for keywords, you ranked for keywords. In 2026, the unit has shifted. Google and the AI engines increasingly think in entities: people, places, organisations, concepts, and the relationships between them. Entity SEO is the practice of making a business legible as an entity, not just a collection of keyword-targeted pages.
What an entity is
An entity is a thing that exists, distinctly, with attributes and relationships. “Sydney” is an entity. “SEO” is an entity. A specific business is an entity. Google’s Knowledge Graph is a vast database of entities and how they relate. When Google understands that your business is an entity, what kind of entity, where it operates, and what it is known for, it can confidently surface it for relevant queries and feed it to AI engines.
When Google does not have a clear entity understanding of a business, the business is just a website competing on words, with no underlying recognition.
Why this matters more in 2026
AI search engines are entity engines. When ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews answer a question, they reason about entities and their relationships, then cite sources. A business that is a well-defined entity gets reasoned about and cited. A business that is not a recognised entity gets skipped, no matter how good its individual pages are.
As AI search grows, entity recognition shifts from a nice-to-have to a prerequisite for visibility.
How to build entity recognition
Consistent identity everywhere. The business name, address, and details must be identical across the website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, directories, and any press. Inconsistency tells Google these might be different entities.
Organisation schema. Ship complete Organization schema on the website: legal name, logo, social profiles via sameAs, founding date, founders, contact points. This is the most direct way to tell Google “here is the entity and here are its attributes”.
The sameAs property. Linking the website’s schema to the business’s profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Crunchbase, industry directories, and Wikidata where possible builds a verified web of identity that Google uses to confirm the entity is real and consistent.
Wikidata and Wikipedia. For businesses notable enough to qualify, a Wikidata entry and ideally a Wikipedia page are strong entity signals. Most small businesses will not qualify for Wikipedia, but Wikidata has a lower bar and is worth pursuing.
Consistent mentions across the web. The more the business is mentioned, by name, on credible sites in its industry, the more Google’s confidence in the entity grows. This overlaps with link building and digital PR, but unlinked mentions count too.
Topical association
Beyond being recognised as an entity, a business wants to be associated with its area of expertise. A Sydney accounting firm wants Google to understand not just “this is a business” but “this is a business associated with accounting, in Sydney, with these specialisations”.
That association is built through consistent, deep content on the topic, mentions in the context of the topic, and structured data that reinforces the connection. It is the difference between Google knowing you exist and Google knowing what you are an authority on.
The practical starting point
For most businesses, entity SEO starts with three moves: ship complete and accurate Organization schema with sameAs links, audit and fix identity consistency across every profile and directory, and build a Wikidata entry. Those three establish the entity foundation. Everything else, content depth, mentions, topical association, builds on top of it.
Entity SEO is technical, detail-oriented, and increasingly central to both traditional and AI search visibility. Sydney SEO Partner’s AI SEO service includes entity-based SEO and Knowledge Graph work as a core component. If your business is invisible to AI engines despite having good content, weak entity recognition is a likely cause, and a free SEO audit will assess where your entity signals stand.
