AI Search Visibility: How to Get Mentioned by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

AI engines now decide whether a business gets cited or skipped. Practical moves that lift the chance of being mentioned by ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.

For 20 years, SEO meant one thing: rank in Google’s blue links. In 2026, a meaningful share of every search query never reaches the blue links at all. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews now answer questions with synthesised paragraphs that mention three or four sources. Being one of those mentioned sources is the new prize.

Generative engine optimisation (GEO), or answer engine optimisation (AEO), is the practice of designing content to get cited by AI engines. The good news is that the playbook overlaps heavily with good traditional SEO. The new news is that there are a few moves that specifically lift AI citation rates.

How AI engines pick what to cite

AI search engines do not just pick the highest-ranked page. They pick the page that best answers the specific question being asked, written in a way the engine can lift, hosted on a domain that other reputable sources reference. The factors that increase the odds of citation are different from the factors that move a page up Google’s blue links.

1. Answer the question in the first paragraph

AI engines lift clear, direct answers. A page that buries the answer below 600 words of preamble loses to a page that opens with a clean two-sentence answer and then explains. The instinct to “hook the reader” with story first is a SEO holdover that works against AI citation.

The fix: every article that wants to be cited should answer its title question in the first paragraph, then go deeper. Even the rest of the article benefits, because traditional readers also appreciate the answer up front.

2. Structure for liftability

Short paragraphs. Clear subheadings. Numbered lists for procedures. Direct claims without excessive hedging. AI engines prefer content that they can quote cleanly without having to rewrite it for clarity.

Content that reads like a knowledgeable employee explaining something gets cited more often than content that reads like marketing copy.

3. Ship structured data

Schema.org structured data is the AI’s cheat sheet. LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Service, Article, and HowTo schemas all directly feed AI engines’ confidence about what your page is and what facts it contains. Pages with rich schema get cited more often than identical pages without.

This overlaps with traditional SEO. Schema you ship for Google’s rich results is the same schema AI engines read.

4. Build authority through mentions

AI engines rate domains partly by how often other reputable sites reference them. Backlinks are the obvious version of this. Unlinked mentions (your business name appearing on a credible site without a link) are nearly as valuable to an AI engine assessing brand authority.

The practical work: PR, guest posts, podcast appearances, industry directory listings, sector-specific publications, and being the source of original research or data. Each one of these adds to the pile of “this brand exists and is taken seriously by other people” signals.

5. Be opinionated

AI engines avoid citing pages that hedge endlessly. They favour pages that make claims directly. “Managed hosting outperforms shared hosting for most business sites” is more likely to be cited than “managed hosting can sometimes be a better choice depending on circumstances”.

Opinions backed by reasoning are the new long tail. The brand voice that is willing to take positions gets cited as a source. The brand voice that avoids positions to sound neutral gets skipped.

Measuring AI visibility

The hard part. There is no Google Search Console for AI citations yet. The current best approaches: track brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity by manually querying relevant questions weekly, monitor referral traffic from chat.openai.com and perplexity.ai in analytics, and use tools like Otterly or AI Visibility Tracker which sample AI engine responses for your brand.

The benchmark to track is “share of voice” in AI answers for your category. If you used to be mentioned 5 times out of 50 relevant queries, the goal is to push that to 15 over a quarter.

The strategy works because it overlaps

Most of what makes content cite-worthy by AI engines also makes it useful to human readers. Clear answers, direct opinions, structured information, authoritative voice. The sites that are winning AI visibility in 2026 are the same sites that would be winning Google rankings if Google were the only thing that mattered.

If your business is barely visible in AI answers, the path forward is the same as the path to better traditional SEO: better content, real schema, real authority. Defyn’s SEO and AI visibility work is built around exactly this overlap.
