AI Overviews Are Eating Your Clicks: How to Respond

AI Overviews answer queries without a click, and traffic is dropping for many sites. A clear-eyed look at what is happening and how to respond.

If your site has seen organic traffic soften over the past year despite stable or improving rankings, AI Overviews are a likely cause. Google increasingly answers queries directly at the top of the results page, and for a large share of informational searches, the user gets what they needed without clicking anything. The ranking is still there. The click is not.

This is the single biggest structural shift in organic search in years. Pretending it is not happening is not a strategy. Here is a clear-eyed look at what is going on and how to respond.

What is actually being lost

The traffic most exposed to AI Overviews is top-of-funnel informational traffic: “what is”, “how does”, “why”. These are exactly the queries an AI answer handles well in a paragraph. The traffic least exposed is transactional and navigational: someone searching to buy, book, or reach a specific business still clicks through.

So the loss is uneven. A site whose traffic was mostly informational blog content is more exposed than a site whose traffic was mostly commercial. Knowing your own mix is the first step.

Response 1: Get cited in the Overview

If the Overview is going to answer the query, being one of the cited sources is the new top position. It still drives some clicks, and it puts the brand in front of the user as an authority. Getting cited means answering questions directly and early, structuring content for extraction, shipping accurate schema, and demonstrating genuine expertise. The content that gets cited is the content that was already good.

Response 2: Shift content toward queries AI cannot fully answer

AI Overviews handle simple, factual questions well. They handle nuanced, experience-based, opinion-driven, or highly specific questions less well. Content that draws on real expertise, original data, specific case studies, and genuine opinion is harder for an Overview to fully replace, because the Overview can summarise facts but cannot replicate lived expertise.

Shifting the content mix toward depth, originality, and genuine point of view is both an AI-resilience strategy and just good content strategy.

Response 3: Prioritise commercial intent content

The queries with commercial intent, the ones where the user is choosing or buying, still drive clicks because the user needs to reach a business to act. Doubling down on content that targets these queries, comparison content, buying guides, service pages, location pages, protects the traffic that actually converts.

The informational content still has a role, building topical authority and feeding the Overview citations, but the commercial content is where the protected click value lives.

Response 4: Build channels that do not depend on the click

Brand recognition, email lists, and direct traffic all become more valuable as the search click becomes less reliable. A business that is known, that has an audience it can reach directly, and that gets searched for by name is less exposed to the AI Overview shift than one entirely dependent on capturing strangers from informational search.

What not to do

Do not stop publishing. Sites that abandon content because of AI Overviews lose their citation eligibility and their topical authority, which makes everything worse. Do not chase the same thin informational queries harder. And do not panic-pivot the whole strategy on one quarter of data. Measure which queries are actually affected before reallocating.

The honest framing

AI Overviews are a permanent change to how search works, not a temporary disruption. The businesses that adapt, getting cited, shifting toward depth and commercial intent, building direct channels, will be fine. The businesses that built everything on capturing informational clicks and do nothing will see that traffic erode quarter by quarter.

Responding to AI Overviews is a core part of Sydney SEO Partner’s AI SEO service: getting cited in Overviews, restructuring content for AI-era search, and building the resilience that protects organic value. If your traffic has softened and you suspect AI Overviews are the cause, a free SEO audit will quantify the exposure and map the response.
